Proteins

What are proteins?

Structure of proteins

Read though Chapter 2.5 and answer questions on page 127
Activity 1
Read through PowerPoint and complete worksheet from the  GTAC Bioinformatic task on Proteins. All the information can be downloaded from this site. The PowerPoint is best dowloaded from here but you can click on Worksheet to get a copy of this.

Activity 2 - Amino Acids

Use the folllowing sources of information to help you randomly select 2 different amino acids:
Draw each structures on a separate piece of A4 paper. Compare their structure using a compare and contrast table.

  • How are they the same?
  • How are they different?

Activity 3 - Condensation reactions
Use the models from Activity 2 as monomers and create a dipeptide.

  • What do you need to cut out and from where?
  • How can you join these together?
Work in groups to combine your dipeptides to form a polypeptide chains.
Compare your chain to others in the class.

Activity 4 - Comparing fibrous and Globular Proteins

1. Use the websites below to explore the structure of a fibrous protein such as collagen to a globular protein such as haemoglobulin (hemoglobulin). Compare and contrast the two molecules.

2. Search for another protein. Create an information chart for this protein identifying some of the important features such as

  • Its name?
  • What organism it is found in?
  • Is it fibrous or globular?
  • What can you tell me about its structure?
  • What can you tell me about its function?
Enter information onto the group summary of proteins on google doc
